Dear supporter,
In the next few days Parliament will once again debate two matters of deep concern for Christians.
On Monday, the House of Lords will give its final consideration to the liberal abortion regulations Westminster has imposed on Northern Ireland. On Wednesday, the House of Commons will consider amendments to the damaging no-fault divorce Bill for England and Wales.
The abortion changes come at a time when so much effort has gone into preserving life amidst the coronavirus outbreak. Similarly, the divorce Bill is set to become law just as many marriages have been placed under unprecedented pressure.
The Bible tells us to pray for those in authority, such as MPs and Peers. In part, this is about the good of our fellow citizens – that includes the unborn, families and wider society.
In the coming days please pray:
- That Peers might be persuaded not to back the new abortion regulations which go far beyond the law in the rest of the UK;
- With thanksgiving for the estimated 100,000 lives that have been spared in Northern Ireland because the Abortion Act 1967 was not introduced there;
- That the new liberal regime will not be used as an excuse to push for even easier access to abortion throughout the whole of the UK;
- That lawmakers would see the unborn, including the disabled, as valuable human beings in need of protection;
- For MPs seeking to amend the no-fault divorce Bill to mitigate its worst effects. Pray that attempts to increase the minimum period for divorce from six months to a year and improve funding for marriage counselling would find support amongst MPs;
- Giving thanks for the benefits that marriage brings to families and society;
- For greater respect for marriage in our culture.
Yours in Christ,
Ciarán Kelly Deputy Director (Staff and Communications) The Christian Institute
