The House is just two days away from critical committee consideration that could slash Medicaid and SNAP by more than $1 trillion, and hand trillions of dollars in tax cuts to the rich and corporations.

Thanks to our grassroots advocacy, congressional Republicans have been forced to delay these votes while making claims that somehow people in communities will not be harmed by the largest cuts to health care and food assistance in our nation’s history.^1,2 But if they are successful this coming week, it could put them on track to pass their billionaire budget on the House floor by Memorial Day.

We’re applying massive pressure, letting Congress know that the American people reject cuts to basic needs to fuel even more tax cuts for billionaires. I’m meeting with key members of these specific committees every day, with some of you joining me for those conversations to share the impact of cuts to basic needs programs. Congressional Republicans are trying to fast-track their bills to devastate basic needs in order to fund even more tax breaks for billionaires and large corporations, and funnel hundreds of billions of dollars toward Trump’s mass deportation program, which is tearing families apart while denying U.S. residents their due process rights.

The U.S. House is holding three big committee markups starting this Tuesday, in an attempt to:

Cut $230 billion (or more!¹) from SNAP
Cut $880 billion from Medicaid
Spend at least $4 trillion on tax cuts for the rich and large corporations

Already, with our coalition partners, we’ve sent nearly 850,000 messages to Capitol Hill over the past few months, letting lawmakers know that the American people reject proposals that slash hundreds of billions from basic needs programs including Medicaid and food assistance, that dismantle the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, that make it tougher for students from lower-income families to access higher education, that turbocharge Trump’s xenophobic mass deportation scheme, that give Pentagon contractors more handouts, and that further enrich billionaires at the expense of our communities.

Due to our grassroots pressure, they’ve been forced to delay these committee votes, but if these three budget bills pass out of Committee next week, the full House could be poised to pass Trump’s “big, beautiful bill” in the next 1.5 weeks―fast-tracking cuts to basic needs alongside tax breaks for billionaires.

Medicaid and the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) are lifelines for families in every community in the U.S., covering 78.5 million people nationwide.² Cuts to Medicaid would take health care away from children with disabilities, force rural hospitals and nursing homes to close, shutter drug treatment programs and reduce access to mental health services, and make it harder for everyone to access the health care they need while driving up health costs for all of us.

SNAP, the country’s most important anti-hunger program, supports more than 40 million people each year, and is increasingly important at a time of rising food costs.³ Food security is linked to so much more than just reducing hunger. Having enough nutritious food has health, life, and work benefits that affect every aspect of our lives. SNAP improves food security and allows families to maintain healthy diets, which in turn leads to long-term positive health outcomes, especially important for children.⁴

Meanwhile, billionaires continue to pay lower effective tax rates than nurses, teachers, and firefighters⁵―and congressional Republicans are seeking to hand their billionaire donors even more tax breaks at a time of widening income and wealth inequality.^6,7 We should not be taking food and health care away from people to double down on these giveaways to the wealthy.
