This Mother’s Day, I’m reflecting on what it means to be a mom in this country, this world, this moment. From Trump’s “motherhood medals” and pro-natalist rhetoric to MAHA and school book bans: moms are at the center of conversations and in the crosshairs of political debates. 

The far-right is trying to weaponize motherhood and put women “in their place,” with moms serving no other purpose but as subservient homemakers and caretakers. They want us to believe that we should keep our heads down and our voices quiet. 

But that’s not the brand of motherhood we subscribe to, John. Vote Mama is dedicated to raising the voices of moms, empowering them to run for office, and recognizing the unique perspectives they bring to making critical policy decisions that impact everyday families. We know how powerful, capable, and fierce moms are when it comes to cutting through the chaos and destruction – and we believe that “our place” as moms is at the table, leading. 

For Mother’s Day, I wrote a story for MSNBC about how we’re getting to the heart of this,why we need more moms in office, and what mamas truly want for Mother’s Day – not fake baby bonuses or motherhood medals. With a president who relentlessly attacks and denigrates motherhood, it’s clear we need a new playbook for moms, built by moms.
