Dear John,

Today, we give thanks for all women, throughout the world and throughout time, who have accepted the tremendous vocation of motherhood.

As Pope St. John Paul II wrote to women in 1995, “You have sheltered human beings within yourselves in a unique experience of joy and travail. This experience makes you become God's own smile upon the newborn child, the one who guides your child's first steps, who helps it to grow, and who is the anchor as the child makes its way along the journey of life."

Mother’s Day is particularly important to me, personally. In 1979, my mom chose to give me life despite her challenging circumstances. Her husband had left her and she was alone with two small children, while also pregnant with me. She could have easily given in to the pressure and uncertainty of being young and unemployed, but she fought for me!

I’m thankful for my mom - and for all moms - for the sacrifices they make raising the next generation.

Our mission at Americans United for Life is to protect and defend the weakest and most vulnerable in our society – the elderly, the sick, the preborn child and his or her mom. We are passionate advocates for a nation in which all children can experience “God’s own smile,” the smile of a mother to her newborn.

On this day, as we celebrate the women who have the greatest impact in our lives, I hope you will join me in creating and defending a culture that cares for women; that honors, values, and cherishes mothers; and that welcomes the newborn, the elderly, and the most vulnerable into our lives.

Finally, I would love to hear from you today! Feel free to respond to this email with a story about your mom, or a significant woman in your life. Let’s spend today celebrating the women who walk with us through our journey of life.

From my family to yours, happy Mother’s Day.
