In key recent elections, from Louisiana to Wisconsin and beyond, voters across the country have been standing together to reject far-right extremism. 

But instead of grappling with those losses appropriately, MAGA Republicans have been doubling down on attacking democracy — in other words, trying to cheat. 

Just look at the SAVE Act they passed through the U.S. House — a voter suppression bill that would undoubtedly disproportionately disenfranchise millions of likely Democratic voters by way of particularly impacting young people and Black and Latino Americans. 

This modern poll tax would add new, unnecessary, and costly citizenship documentation requirements to the voter registration process, effectively shutting down key methods of signing up to vote, including automatic voter registration (AVR) programs.

In Georgia, AVR has increased voter registration rates by 20%, with the voter rolls becoming more representative of the state’s population. Our leaders should celebrate that type of progress — not undermine it.

All in all, the SAVE Act is a grave assault on the freedom to vote. While violating that bedrock principle of our democracy, it would make key battleground states more vulnerable for Democratic candidates and elected leaders ahead of the 2026 midterm elections — where Georgia Senator Jon Ossoff is “the most endangered Senate Democratic incumbent” according to Punchbowl News.

We’ve seen it time and again. The far right loses and screams “fraud.” They attempt to pull every trick in the book to prevent voters from using their voices, from educating themselves, and from using their democratic right and freedom to hold elected officials accountable. 

But they’re only doing this because they are scared — and they’re right to be. Because we, the people, have power, and MAGA Republicans know it. 

Honestly, extremists are banking on us to give up and give in to their fear-mongering intimidation tactics. 

But rather than fall victim to their baseless claims, we’re working to prevent or mitigate voter suppression tactics, expose GOP attacks on democracy, and elect voting rights champions up and down the ballot.
