Dear John, 177 years ago after the horrors and devastation of the Civil War, Julia Ward Howe penned the Mother’s Day Proclamation, beginning with the words "Arise, all women who have hearts," calling on women to gather together in the "great and general interests of peace." For 23 years, CODEPINK has gathered in beautiful ways to celebrate her words and lay out our plans for peace. For many years it was a 24-hour vigil outside the White House. One year, we stitched together a 120-foot cozy with a line from the Mother’s Day Proclamation: "We will not raise our children to kill another mother’s child." Five years ago, CODEPINK activist and author Rivera Sun penned a new proclamation for our time, beginning with: "Instead of flowers, give us peace. Instead of brunch, end the wars." It ended with: Let every mother stand against war. Let every mother call for peace. Let every mother’s cry be heard. As we witness the devastation of wars across this planet today let us all listen to these pleas and Arise to the call to not be silent, to be engaged for Peace. It cannot happen without us. We see it is the community of the people, not those in power. That could not be more clear in this moment of history. The war economy has become our culture and it is up to us to cultivate and teach the peace economy habits. That starts at home in our communities as we together create conditions conducive for life. From the ground up we will plant the seeds of peace, nourish them, take those roots deep into the earth and into our hearts. CODEPINK activists across the country are serving the needs of mothers in their communities today. We are here to help you too. Join us in your community, or join the local peacemaker community and learn more. Below are the proclamations—share them with friends and invite them into conversation.A video from 2020 raising up the plight of Palestinian mothers, and other mothers in war zones with the reading of Rivera’s words and a link to Aliza Harva singing the Julia Ward Howe Mother’s Day proclamation. This is not a Hallmark holiday, it is a call for us to create peace. Join us. We have tools and support and love. Onward to peace, together, 💖 Jodie Rivera Sun's proclamation read by Jodie
