Speaker Mike Johnson and the House GOP recently voted to drastically reduce the power of the judicial branch to check Trump’s power.

At a time when Trump says he doesn’t know if he needs to follow the Constitution,1 this is an alarming piece of legislation. The No Rogue Rulings Act is an extreme right-wing reaction to judges placing injunctions on Trump’s policies. The bill would prevent district judges from halting Trump’s illegal actions.2

Federal judges have been one of the strongest checks on the Trump administration’s attempts to execute illegal actions as part of its right-wing, anti-democracy agenda. The GOP is trying to take power away from judges by passing the No Rogue Rulings Act.

Top Trump adviser, Stephen Miller, is leading the charge to spread propaganda about so-called “activist judges” — claiming that any judge ruling against Trump is “communist” and “extreme.”3

Republicans have been spouting absurd propaganda while trying to build a case for this unprecedented legislation. Rep. Darrell Issa pushed the bill, making the false, nonsensical claim that, “Left-leaning activists have cooperated with ideological judges who they have sought out to take their cases and weaponize nationwide injunctions to stall dozens of lawful executive actions and initiatives.”4 These statements are both ridiculous and dangerous.

“If you don’t like the injunctions, don’t do illegal, unconstitutional stuff,” said Rep. Pramila Jayapal in reaction to Trump’s policies and the passage of this bill.5 If the Senate doesn’t preserve the power of the judiciary by rejecting this legislation, Trump will expand his unchecked powers and execute more of his horrifying agenda.
