Massive news out of North Carolina this week, John: Justice Allison Riggs officially won her election to the state Supreme Court! This is a major victory for justice and democracy.
Millions of voters showed up in November to support Justice Riggs. But when a full machine recount showed that she was in the lead, Republicans launched a huge legal challenge designed to throw out more than 60,000 ballots and hand the seat to a conservative.
They failed. After months in court, her opponent finally conceded because he saw what we already knew: When everyday people organize and vote to defend our courts, we can win.
This is exactly what we are fighting for. We need more fair-minded judges and justices like Justice Riggs to defend the rule of law. We need to speak out every time the MAGA cult tries to weaponize our courts to seize power. We need a grassroots movement strong enough to defend our democracy, no matter what they throw at it.
Let’s celebrate this win, but remember the work is far from over. Donald Trump and his far-right loyalists are still doing everything they can to erode the courts so they serve his harmful agenda, not the people.
