Dear [email protected],

On Tuesday, I was officially sworn in as your new state senator for District 6. I wanted to take a moment to introduce myself: My name is Keri Heintzeman, and I'm incredibly honored by the trust you’ve placed in me to be your voice here in St. Paul.

As a true Northern Minnesotan, I've lived here my whole life, been happily married to my husband, Josh, for 25 years, built a business from the ground up, and have raised our 6 children right here. I have a good handle on the challenges our communities' families and local businesses face every day because I have been through them too. I promise to bring that perspective with me every day and stay focused on the things that truly matter to you, the people I now represent.

To do this job well, I need to hear from you. Your feedback, questions, and ideas are always welcome and encouraged, whether we agree or not. You can reach me by email at [email protected] or by phone at 651-296-7079.

I also invite you to follow along at fb.com/SenatorHeintzeman, where I will post regular updates from the Capitol.

Common-sense changes to the sick time mandate

On Wednesday, I, along with my Senate Republican colleagues, brought forward and successfully passed greatly needed improvements to Minnesota’s Earned Sick and Safe Time law. Small business owners, family farms, and employers across Minnesota have been struggling under the one-size-fits-all mandate that Democrats passed in 2023. The mandate simply doesn’t reflect the realities and challenges of running a small (or ultra-small) business. Even though this wasn't a fix-all, it is certainly a good start.

We made two key changes:

  • First, we exempted farms with five or fewer employees and small businesses with three or fewer employees from the ESST mandate.
  • Second, we made it easier for employers to request documentation for sick time.

These are reasonable, common-sense changes that still protect workers while easing the burden on our smallest employers.

If you have any questions about this bill or anything else happening in St Paul, please do not hesitate to ask. I look forward to serving you!

Sincerely,

Keri Heintzeman

Minnesota Senate, District 6
