My parents came to the United States when I was just a baby. They worked hard to give us a better life but fell on hard times.

We lived in public housing and depended on food stamps to eat.
But with the help of my community, government assistance, and the money I saved working at McDonalds – I went to college and graduated from law school.

I got my first role in Illinois politics working for another guy from Illinois with a funny name on his first Senate campaign – Barack Obama.

I’ve spent most of my adult life working to improve the lives of families like mine and protect the benefits we depended on like so many families do.
