Email from Rep. Hinson Friend, Happy National Small Business Week! Small businesses make up 99% of American companies and are truly the backbone of Iowa's economy. I’m so grateful to our small business community for working so hard to contribute to our economy and being great community partners. Deregulation is essential for the survival of America’s small businesses, and Congress is working to reverse the disastrous economic environment the Biden Administration created. Just last week, we voted to overturn five more Biden-era regulations that took consumer choice out of Americans’ hands. Gone are the days of woke bureaucrats forcing unaffordable options on Americans, discouraging business growth, and damaging the economy. I’ve been extremely proud to fight for Iowa’s small businesses—from helping introduce the Main Street Tax Certainty Act to make the 20% small business tax deduction permanent, to backing the Death Tax Repeal Act so family businesses can be passed on to the next generation. I’m also working to promote opportunities for higher education for families of small business owners with the Family Farm and Small Business Exemption Act, cut red tape with the Repealing Big Brother Overreach Act, and level the playing field against the CCP with my Protecting American Industry and Labor from International Trade Crimes Act. I’m proud to be a champion in Congress for small businesses and will continue working to empower our small business workforce, reverse Bidenflation, and help Main Street businesses thrive. Best, Honoring American Greatness This week I voted to formally rename the Gulf of Mexico the Gulf of America. People have asked why this is such a big deal and why this was something that President Trump prioritized. I think, for too long, America took a back seat on the world stage. Allowing what would rightfully be called the Gulf of America to be called the Gulf of Mexico is just one reflection of that. This is about putting our heritage, history, and values at the forefront. When America is great, the world is great. Discussing Iowans' Priorities with President Trump's Cabinet This week, I participated in a House Appropriations Homeland Security Subcommittee hearing, where I had a great discussion with DHS Secretary Kristi Noem about the Trump Administration’s unprecedented efforts to secure the border and protect American families. Over the last four years, Biden abused taxpayer dollars, housing illegal immigrants at fancy hotels and handing out taxpayer-funded benefits to illegal aliens, just to name a few. In just seven weeks, President Trump and Secretary Noem have gotten DHS back to its core mission: protecting Americans and our homeland. All it took was new leadership. No longer will American taxpayers foot the bill for illegal immigrants. Click here to watch my full discussion with Department of Homeland Security Secretary Noem. I also had the chance to participate in a House Appropriations Ag-FDA Subcommittee hearing with USDA Secretary Brooke Rollins. On behalf of Iowa’s farmers and producers, I’m fighting to ensure they have a seat at the table to discuss policies that affect them. I also addressed barriers to interstate commerce. It’s long overdue that we end California's attacks on Iowa farmers, and I appreciate Secretary Rollins for joining me in standing against radical laws like Prop 12 that significantly harm family farmers in Iowa. The fact is California is free to regulate its own producers, but radical California activists who have never set foot on a farm should not be telling our Iowa farmers how to do their job. I talked to him about the importance of protecting taxpayer dollars by preventing fraud and clawing back improper payments that waste your hard-earned money. Under President Trump and Secretary Bessent, we are ending the massive waste in our government, building a resilient economy, and returning to fair trade for hardworking Americans. In Case You Missed It: Quick Hits I had an inspiring meeting with singer songwriter Christina Perri to hear her powerful story, and I thanked her for her work on behalf of moms and women who want to become moms. The White House Rapid Response: Rep. Hinson’s conversation with Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent. I applauded Governor Reynolds for signing legislation restricting cell phone use in our children's classrooms. I celebrated and thanked Iowa's small business community during National Small Business Week. I thanked President Trump for his work bringing wrongly detained Americans home and reuniting them with their families. I gave an update on my vote to ban Chinese Confucius Institutes in the United States, which allow CCP influence in our colleges and universities. I recognized the important work of midwives on International Midwife Day. I showed support for President Trump's executive order banning gain of function research. On National Teacher Appreciation Day, I recognized the work of Iowa's outstanding teachers. I thanked President Trump for prioritizing new market opportunities for Iowa’s farmers and biofuels producers. I joined the rest of the Iowa delegation for a great meeting with the Iowa Hospital Association. I reiterated my support for banning and blacklisting the Chinese robotics firm Unitree, a dangerous affiliate of the CCP. I joined the Greater Des Moines Partnership for breakfast and a great discussion about how we’re serving Iowans.
