We've talked a lot about some of these (like our sponsored bills, the Polluters Pay Climate Superfund Act and the Affordable Insurance and Climate Recovery Act) and there are several other priority bills on the table right now that you should know about.

Something to Celebrate: This year, California lawmakers are making big moves to clean up our water.
EnviroVoters is supporting several bills on protecting clean water that are passing through their first committees with flying colors. One big one is the Right to Clean Water Act (SB 601) by Senator Ben Allen, which recently passed through the Senate Judiciary Committee with a strong vote of 10-3!
This bill acts as a direct response to the Supreme Court's 2023 decision on Sackett v. Environmental Protection Agency, where they ruled that water that doesn't flow constantly—like many of the streams and wetlands with seasonal variance that feed into our major rivers, lakes, and coastal areas—aren't subject to federal Clean Water Act protections. This bill fixes that issue by enshrining tributary protections into state law so we can make sure California's water stays clean, even as the federal government moves backwards.
Something You Can Do:
California is facing an affordability crisis made worse by the climate crisis—and we're all feeling the effects. Through the current model, ratepayers cover prevention and recovery from polluter-caused climate impacts like wildfires and heat waves through rising utility rates.
That's why EnviroVoters is sponsoring a suite of bills in the California legislature, including the California Ratepayer Protection Act (AB 1167) and Hardship Deferments for Energy Service (SB 636), to keep energy safe, reliable, equitable, and affordable. These measures address the drivers of high rates through oversight and accountability, upgrading to clean energy to keep costs low, and protecting California's households from excessive rate increases on their utility bills.
