Trump is reviving Guantánamo Bay’s disgraceful legacy by detaining migrants there, including people never charged with a crime.
The horrific conditions, unlawful detentions, and history of torture that has occured on this base are well known. No one should be held there – yet that is exactly what Trump is trying to do.
Last week, I offered an amendment to prohibit more taxpayer funds from being used to continue this inhumane abuse of power. Instead of standing up to Trump, House Republicans voted my amendment down.
This is a cruel, costly scheme designed to evade legal scrutiny and I won’t stand for it. Holding prisoners without due process is abhorrent and a stain on our national honor. Add your name to stand with me against this disgraceful and dangerous abuse of power.
The power to imprison people indefinitely – with no chance to prove their innocence – is not a power I would trust to any man, king, dictator, and certainly no president.
Trump has recently been floating the outlandish idea of reviving Alcatraz to imprison people. This costly and unattainable goal to revive this relic simply to detain more migrants in inhuman conditions is all in an effort to satisfy his god complex.
It is time to end this national embarrassment. We should not be wasting another penny holding migrants on this base. Secret, offshore imprisonment without legal rights has no place in our democracy.
I’ll never stop fighting back against Trump’s abuse of power and dangerous decisions. Add your name to show we won’t stand for this violation of human rights and rule of law.
Thank you for using your voice,
