In case you missed it:
* After incumbent Justice Allison Riggs narrowly won reelection to the
North Carolina Supreme Court in November, her GOP rival launched a
massive legal campaign to overturn the will of voters.
* The GOP attempted to throw out more than 65,000 lawfully cast ballots,
citing several bogus ‘election integrity’ issues. Sound familiar?
* For six months, millions of dollars were spent, hundreds of legal
documents were filed, and it took thousands of volunteers to finally
secure a narrow win for democracy.
But we’ll be honest with you,
John. This news, while a
relief, is not going to fix everything.
Anti-democratic justices still hold a majority on the state Supreme Court
and still have the power to uphold any anti-voting bills the state
legislature passes.
This means our work to defend our democracy is far from over.
Whether you live in North Carolina or across the country, this week
secured a crucial victory in our larger fight to safeguard democracy from
far-right extremists.
In the era of Trump 2.0, we must protect our rights and freedoms every
day, without pause. We can’t let up now.
That’s why we must commit to building a better democracy that works for
all of us, and organizations like the Voter Action Project are making it
happen.
