If you’ve been reading these emails closely -- and it’s okay if you missed it! -- you might remember that we told you about Democratic Rep. Josh Gottheimer (NJ-5) and his power play to give Trump and ICE exactly what they needed to expand their detention camps and ramp up their deportation activities.

It’s disgraceful. Josh needs to stand up for immigrants and refugees, not collaborate with the Trump Administration and ICE.

So we wanted you to know early: this afternoon, we’re going to launch a $15,000 slate of insurgent digital ads calling out Rep. Gottheimer for what he’s done. We will give his constituents the tools to flex their constituent power against his shameful actions -- right now, as he’s home for the August Recess and preparing to head back to Washington, where cutting funding for ICE and other enforcement activities will be top progressive priorities in the next few weeks.

So what can you do about it from where you are? Here’s the deal:

We’re asking you to pitch in $10 to support Indivisible Project, including crowdfunding our $15,000 in digital ads targeting Rep. Gottheimer. He practically delivered Trump and ICE’s cruel, deportation agenda on a silver platter. This is a chance to fight back -- but only if we can afford it.

What Happened:

If you’re not quite ready to pitch in, give us a moment to refresh your memory about this disgraceful story.

Congress -- including the Democratically-controlled House -- gave Trump the supplemental Department of Homeland Security funding he requested, without meaningful guardrails for how that money would be spent. In other words, they simply wrote Trump and his deportation machine a blank check to continue terrorizing immigrant families.

How did that happen? A group of conservative Democrats, organized by Rep. Gottheimer and the ironically-named “Problem Solvers Caucus,” led an internal revolt demanding that the House pass the bad Senate bill, with no amendments. Yes, a group of Democrats gave the Trump Administration and its enforcement goons a blank check.

Speaker Pelosi caved and passed (with mainly Republican votes!) Mitch McConnell’s bill. Immigrant rights groups, progressive members of Congress, and the Congressional Hispanic Caucus opposed the bill and even said it would make the situation in concentration camps worse. 

What we do next:

• We send a message that we will not tolerate power plays to beef up funding for concentration camps and deportation activities. 
• We give Gottheimer’s constituents the information and tools to tell him exactly what they think of his support for ICE and the Trump Administration, right before he heads back to Washington to debate on immigration.

But we can’t do it without you. Indeed, this entire movement would not be possible without you. It’s not lost on us how much people have given generously to this work -- all of the calls to Members of Congress, the hours spent volunteering and organizing, and the money donated. Because we can make a real impact here, we’re asking you to give again now to help us raise the $15,000 to fund these ads.

A note about party unity:

Look -- we know a lot of Indivisibles worry when we start calling out (and calling in) Democrats. We worry about that too. We need to be united and working together in the face of this administration.

But when Democrats do something as disgraceful as propping up President Trump and ICE, we must bring them to account. This isn’t a disagreement about how we achieve universal access to healthcare: it’s a fundamental question of what we stand for as Democrats. Making sure our elected officials vote for our values is an important and healthy part of our movement building work, and core to our mission of building lasting power and reshaping what’s politically possible.
