Congressman Krishnamoorthi delivers his opening statement denouncing Republican proposals to cut Medicaid, SNAP, and other social programs. (Click the image above to watch his full opening statement.)

On Wednesday, I took part in a House Oversight Subcommittee hearing on Health Care and Financial Services, where I pushed back forcefully against Republican efforts to cut our country’s social safety net. Current proposals would slash more than $1.1 trillion from Medicaid and the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), formerly known as food stamps. These are programs that keep food on the table and lifesaving health care within reach for tens of millions of Americans, including millions in Illinois. Fundamentally, the proposed plan would cut these critical programs for seniors and working families in order to give large tax cuts to the wealthiest among us.
During the hearing, I spoke not only as a member of Congress but as someone who personally benefited from these programs as a child. When my family immigrated to this country, we relied on housing assistance and food stamps until my father found a good job in Peoria. In other words, these programs helped my family achieve the American Dream. I will not stand by while the next generation is denied that same chance. Last Friday, I had the honor of hosting a panel discussion at Harper College to encourage students to pursue careers in public service. I was joined by three incredible public servants who began their journeys in my office: Cook County Commissioner Kevin Morrison, Hanover Park Trustee and Senator Durbin’s Regional Director Yasmeen Bankole, and Ted Mason, Chief of Staff to Commissioner Morrison. Each shared powerful insights from their careers helping constituents and strengthening our communities. Events like these remind us that government works best when it is rooted in service, compassion, and the recognition that we can achieve more when we work together. Serving our communities is not just a job; it's a calling. I’m so proud of these leaders and excited to see the next generation step forward to serve. You can watch our entire discussion here.

Congressman Krishnamoorthi answering questions during his fireside chat on tariffs and foreign policy with Dr. Richard Haass. (Click the image above to watch the conversation.)

On Tuesday, I held a fireside chat with Dr. Richard Haass, a former president of the Council on Foreign Relations and a leading voice in American foreign policy. We discussed the economic harm caused by blanket tariffs, the ongoing war in Ukraine, the growing alignment between authoritarian regimes like Russia and China, and how the United States can build on our global leadership while protecting our economic and national security interests. We also incorporated questions from constituents watching at home. If you missed the conversation, you can watch it here.

Last week, I published an op-ed in the Daily Herald laying out the devastating economic toll of President Trump’s blanket tariffs — and why we need a bipartisan “Coalition to Prevent Recession,” or CPR, to reverse course before it’s too late. The blanket, across-the-board tariffs amount to one of the largest tax hikes in modern history, driving up costs for working families, potentially crippling our manufacturing and agriculture sectors, and threatening a recession. In the Midwest, we’re already seeing the damage: layoffs, rising grocery prices, and shrinking retirement savings. I’m working across the aisle to repeal these reckless tariffs and bring certainty and relief to American families and businesses. You can read my full op-ed here.
