Hello from St. Paul,
I am pleased with bipartisan taxes legislation moving forward in the Minnesota House that rejected all proposed tax increases and begins to address our state’s future deficit problems.
Minnesotans pay enough to their state government, so it was important that we stopped the cycle of tax increases moving forward at the State Capitol, and this bill would accomplish that goal.
Last session, the legislative majority approved $10 billion in tax increases in addition to spending a record $18 billion surplus. Two years later, Minnesota now faces a likely record $6 billion deficit.
The taxes proposal will reduce state spending by $40 million in Fiscal Year 2026-2027 and another $40 million Fiscal Year 2028-2029.
In addition to avoiding any tax increases on hardworking Minnesotans, the plan also increases the market value exclusion amounts for homesteads occupied by disabled veterans; allows more senior citizen homeowners to defer a portion of their property taxes; and creates a sales tax collection credit for small to mid-size retailers, allowing them to retain a portion of collected sales tax.
Have a good weekend,
Marj
