Hi John,

Did you miss our latest webinar, “Misinformation, Maternal Mortality, and Abortion Bans”? Catch up now to hear from experts working at the intersections of abortion access, public health, and racial justice. Reports continue to emerge of people dying due to abortion bans and as deep racial disparities in maternal mortality persist, anti-abortion leaders are doubling down on disinformation and deflection. By blaming patients, targeting providers, and spreading fear, they’re trying to obscure the real and devastating impact of abortion restrictions. Tune in to get an evidence-based look at the crisis—and learn how you can take action to fight misinformation, and protect pregnant people’s lives.

Protect Access to Essential Care

The campaign to defund Planned Parenthood isn’t new, but the threats are becoming more extreme. Anti-abortion extremists are ramping up their attacks, with some suggesting it would be “worth it” to shut down the federal government unless Planned Parenthood is stripped of funding. This isn’t just about abortion—it’s an all-out assault on essential health care, especially for low-income and trans communities. Planned Parenthood provides critical services from STI testing to gender-affirming care, our movement must stay alert and unified because when anti-abortion extremists come for one of us, they come for all of us.

Self-Care

Self-care is an intentional practice that roots us in the present despite the oppression we may face. Regular self-care is essential for sustainable and effective activism.

Here are our self-care tips for May:

1. Share stories. Héctor Tobar wrote “No matter where we find ourselves, no matter how far we’ve traveled, Latino people carry Latin American stories with them.” I believe it’s such a precious and sacred thing to be able to learn about family history and stories through your abuelos or tias, even our own stories have such significant value. Compartiendo our experiences with others is an act of solidarity in itself, we are never truly alone. – Jacqueline, Senior Outreach Coordinator

2. Keep showing up! Making new friends (especially as an adult!) can feel hard and awkward a lot of times. But the only way to build your community is to commit and show up. It's often easier to stay home, but going to a standing meeting (a class, a group, a lesson) builds in time to make deeper connections. – Liz, Director of Development and Operations

3. Lean into childhood hobbies! As a child, I loved coloring pictures and collecting stickers to put on my school notebooks. I’ve found that those things are still fun and relaxing for me, so why not do them? Try to think about what activities you enjoyed as a child and see if you can pick them back up. You might be surprised by how much joy you can get from the simple things. – Annie, Senior Special Projects Coordinator

See you next month!
