What a week in Georgia. On Tuesday, Georgia was the laughingstock of the country in a way we haven’t seen since the Iowa Primary. We saw hours long lines to vote, closed polling places, voting times extended past 10PM, and malfunctioning voting machines -- all during a pandemic. As a result, thousands of voters were disenfranchised. How does this continue to happen over and over again in our state?
My opponent Karen Handel has been called the “architect of modern day voter suppression” in Georgia, and we must hold her accountable. We can not let Handel get back to Congress in November -- not in an election as consequential as this one. Our opponent Karen Handel is one of the people most responsible for creating Georgia’s system of voter suppression. How? Let’s review:
FIRST : During her time as Secretary of State, Handel tried to purge thousands of registered and eligible voters from the rolls just before the 2008 election when our country elected Barack Obama. Luckily, the ACLU and other organizations sued Handel and were able to stop the purge.
NEXT: Despite that victory, Handel still forced thousands of voters she tried to purge to cast a “provisional ballot” at the polls, which Rep. John Lewis called “an attempt to take us back to another dark period in our history when people were denied access to the ballot box because of their race.”
SUSPICIOUSLY: After the election, the Justice Department said Handel’s purge violated the Voting Rights Act and that “African Americans comprised a majority of the registrants flagged" and "Hispanic and Asian individuals are more than twice as likely to appear on the list than White applicants.”
IN 2017: When she was running against Jon Ossoff for Georgia’s 6th District, Handel said it “made her blood boil” when Democrats had the audacity to try and extend a voter registration deadline so more voters could participate in a special election.
ON TUESDAY: Handel defended her awful record on voting rights, saying she was responsible for making Georgia “a national model for voter integrity.”
Unbelievable. This is who we’re up against in November.
