A message from Council Leader, Councillor Neghat Khan

On Monday 12 May the City Council’s Annual General Meeting will be live streamed for the first time. The meeting will take place in the Council House, but residents will be able to watch proceedings from the comfort of their own homes, as it live streams through the Council’s YouTube channel [ [link removed] ].

The full agenda for the meeting is available on our website [ [link removed] ], which includes the election of the Lord Mayor, appointment of the Sheriff, as well as the announcement of changes to our Executive Member and portfolio areas and more.

This week, I have been reflecting on the significance of VE Day as the country remembers and honours those who served their country. As the Second World War moves further from living memory, we will never forget the sacrifice made by generations before us.

Looking ahead to the weekend, I’ll be wishing Notts County well in their push for promotion and Leigh Wood ahead of his IBO Super Featherweight fight on Saturday night!

Remembering VE day

Yesterday, Nottingham joined the rest of the country to remember VE Day.

We honour the bravery, sacrifice, and resilience of those who served and those who supported from home.

We remember the past, and continue to work for peace in the future.

Cllr Neghat Khan, leader of Nottingham City Council said:

“As the Second World War moves further from living memory we should never forget the ultimate sacrifices which previous generations made. The 80th anniversary of VE Day is an important moment to remember and honour those who served our country.

“Nottingham will remember them.”

More local businesses benefit from greener travel grants! ??

Stewarts of Trent Bridge are delivering greener coffee and cakes thanks to a grant from Nottingham City Council!

Stewarts of Trent Bridge are a local coffee roaster based in Sneinton who sell coffee, run workshops and run three Blend cafes. Now, they’ve made their local delivery and collection services greener and cleaner thanks to our Workplace Travel Service.

After successfully applying for and receiving a grant totalling almost £5,000, Stewarts were able to invest in two e-bikes, including a cargo e-bike to use for local deliveries, as well as two EV charging points.

The cargo bike has quickly replaced a diesel van as the vehicle of choice for local city deliveries, as well as moving coffee and cakes between cafes, while the EV charging points have enabled Stewarts to begin transitioning away from petrol and diesel powered vehicles, introducing two electric vehicles with plans to add more.

Local businesses, public/voluntary sector organisations and faith groups are encouraged to apply, with up to £25,000 up for grabs per application to help improve workplace travel options by introducing eCargo bikes, cycle shelters, showers for cyclists and electric vehicle charging points.  If the application is successful businesses get 75% of the net costs. Public, voluntary sector, and charity groups can apply for 100% funded grants.

Harvey Hadden solar panels

Harvey Hadden Sports Village on track to become one of the UK’s Largest Solar-Powered Leisure Centres

Harvey Hadden Sports Village, part of Nottingham City Council, is believed to be the UK’s largest solar-powered leisure centre, with a total installed solar photovoltaic (PV) capacity of 571.5 kWp, following the completion of its third phase of solar installation.

This groundbreaking milestone underscores Nottingham’s leadership in renewable energy and advances the city’s ambitious goal of achieving carbon neutrality.

This investment of over £449,000 of Salix support is a vital component of Nottingham City Council’s broader strategy to reduce carbon emissions and increase sustainable energy across the city. The recent expansion cements Harvey Hadden’s status as a leader in renewable energy within the public sector.

pension
Nottingham City Council is encouraging citizens to check if they are eligible to be claiming pension credit.

It is estimated that over £11.5 million in pension credit is going unclaimed in Nottingham City. Pension credit can not only top up income but acts as a passport to unlocking other benefits including housing benefit and council tax support as well as eligibility for winter fuel payments, free NHS dental treatment, hospital transport and lower water bills.

We're looking to reinstate restrictions on the display of letting boards in parts of Hyson Green & Arboretum, Lenton & Wollaton East and Radford, following several complaints from members of the public, resident groups and local councillors about the increasing quantity of them.
