BREAKING: A federal court declares that Alabama’s congressional map must follow the Voting Rights Act

Team,

In a big win for fairness in Alabama, a federal court ruled today in Caster v. Allen that Black Alabamians will continue to vote under a fair congressional map. This is a testament to Alabamians who have fought so hard for equal representation — and now have the most representative congressional map of their lifetimes.

The state of Alabama has repeatedly tried to dilute the voting power of its Black population. Despite Black voters making up 27% of the voting age population, the state enacted a congressional map that allowed Black Alabamians the opportunity to elect a candidate of their choice in only one district. Our affiliate, the National Redistricting Foundation (NRF), filed the first legal challenge to that map, which resulted in the Supreme Court striking the map down for violating Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act (VRA) in Allen v. Milligan.

But that hasn’t stopped Alabama lawmakers, who have continued to undermine, ignore, and outright challenge the decision. The NRF has supported the plaintiffs who’ve fought back to preserve this VRA-compliant map throughout.

Look: We’re not surprised that Alabama’s VRA-compliant map faced this attack. Anti-democracy gerrymanderers will stop at nothing to unjustly win and hold on to power. Today’s decision means Black voters, despite constant efforts to diminish their voting power, will continue to make their voices heard in two districts for the rest of the decade.

Whether Alabama, Florida, or Louisiana: All On The Line is committed to pushing back against anti-democracy forces wherever and whenever they come for our rights.
