John: Donald Trump is evading demands for gun violence prevention.

Trump claimed that our country already has “a lot of background checks right now,” implying there’s no need for further action.

We disagree. We need action NOW.

Background check legislation has already saved countless lives. However, new ways to bypass those safeguards have emerged, including gun sales made online, at gun shows, and person to person. That’s why after we won back the House, one of the first acts the Democratic Majority took was to advance two measures for stronger background checks that expand current legislation and close loopholes.

An overwhelming 90% of Americans support background checks. We can’t allow Trump and McConnell to continue to recklessly ignore them.
