Dear Friend,
As of yesterday, May 7, 2025, you will need a REAL ID or another federally accepted form of identification, such as a U.S. Passport, to board domestic flights and enter certain federal buildings.
Getting a REAL ID is not mandatory. However, if you plan to fly within the United States and do not have a valid U.S. Passport, you will need a REAL ID driver's license or another acceptable form of ID. To see a full list of acceptable identification at the TSA checkpoint, click here.
You can continue to drive with a standard New Jersey driver’s license, and if you have a valid U.S. Passport, you may use that for travel instead of a REAL ID. If you don’t have a passport or an up-to-date passport, now is the time to act — and my office has resources to help.
Traveling After May 7 Without an Up-to-Date Passport?
If you need to fly and do not have an up-to-date U.S. Passport, our office may be able to assist you.
- You can apply for a new passport or renewal by following the instructions on Travel.State.Gov. You can check the current processing times for U.S Passports here.
- You can also get assistance on applying for or renewing a passport from your county government:
- Burlington County click here
- Camden County click here
- Gloucester County click here
Please remember that passport appointments are only accepted within two weeks of a travel date and aren’t always guaranteed. It is best to apply for or renew your passport at least 3 to 6 months before you plan to travel. If you need assistance, you can fill out this Privacy Release Form so our team can begin trying to assist you.
How do I get a REAL ID?
You can schedule an appointment at REALID.nj.gov. To find out what you need to bring with you for your REAL ID appointment, a full checklist and document selector tool are available here.
