John,
Congressional Republicans are trying to fast-track a budget that takes critical health and nutrition programs away from our communities in order to pay for even more tax breaks for billionaires and large corporations.
They know this is deeply unpopular with the American people, which is why they are attempting to hold this budget vote quickly, within the next two weeks.
My Democratic colleagues and I are fighting back. This week, we introduced a Hands Off Medicaid and SNAP discharge petition, which, if passed, would prevent the largest cuts to Medicaid and food assistance ever.
Right now, 101 of my colleagues and I have added our names to the discharge petition. We need 218 signers in order to force a vote in the House of Representatives.

Nearly 80 million people rely on Medicaid and the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) to meet their basic healthcare needs.1 And more than 40 million people rely on SNAP nutrition benefits each month to put food on the table.2
But that only just begins to tell the story of the critical impact that Medicaid and SNAP have on our communities. More than 40% of births in the U.S. are covered by Medicaid, including roughly 50% of births in rural areas.3
Medicaid also covers more than 60% of nursing home care, making it the primary funder for the majority of nursing home residents in the U.S.4
Proposed cuts to nutrition benefits will impact kids, veterans, seniors, people with disabilities, and more. Food security is linked to so much more than just reducing hunger.
Having enough nutritious food has health, life, school, and work benefits that affect every aspect of our lives. SNAP improves food security and allows families to maintain healthy diets, which in turn leads to long-term positive health outcomes.5
Plus, each $1 spent on SNAP generates more than $1.50 in economic activity, supporting local farmers and grocery stores while also creating jobs.6
Healthcare and nutrition are basic needs. Cutting these to pay for more tax cuts for billionaires is obscene.
Add your name now as a grassroots co-sponsor of the Hands Off Medicaid and SNAP discharge petition to demand Congress block any cuts to Medicaid and SNAP in the forthcoming budget.
Together, we’re standing up to the billionaire bullies who seek to control our democracy and steal from our communities.
Always serving you,
Rashida
