Dear Friend,

In the newsletter this week...
* What deal has the government struck over Indian workers and National Insurance?
* Fake Nigel Farage article supporting means-tested pensions shared online
* MPs can’t claim £50 to buy their breakfast
* Government tracker

But first...

As tensions between India and Pakistan have spilt over into confrontation, we’re seeing an increase in misinformation surrounding the events taking place in the region.

In the two examples we’ll show you today, you’ll see content claimed to be something it isn’t.

The first is an image which purportedly shows an Indian Air Force plane that has been shot down by Pakistan. ([link removed]) The second is a video which is said to show anIndian missile strike ([link removed]) on Pakistan.

Neither is what they are claimed to be, but they are both circulating widely online.

During big events where the facts have yet to be fully established, we regrettably see a sharp increase in misinformation.

Fact checks play an important role during these moments by helping fill the information void

A political row has erupted over the ramifications of the UK’s newly announced trade deal with India, after claims that exempting some Indian workers from National Insurance contributions could risk undercutting British workers.

We’ve set out what we know about the announcement so far.

A search of the Telegraph’s archives returns no results for an article using the wording of the image. The screenshot appears to be an edited version of the mobile view of an unrelated story, which uses the same photo of Nigel Farage and was published by the newspaper on 11 January.
Multiple social media posts are sharing a screenshot of an article purporting to be by Reform UK leader Nigel Farage in which he calls for pensions to be means-tested.

An incorrect claim that MPs can claim £50 to cover the cost of their breakfast is circulating on social media again.

MPs can claim up to £25 per night for food and non-alcoholic drinks bought during an overnight stay outside their constituency or London on parliamentary business.
