Men’s Health Strategy: Five things you need to know about men’s alcohol consumption
[link removed]

A 12-week public consultation for the UK’s first Men’s Health Strategy was launched recently by the Department for Health and Social Care (DHSC). It welcomes input and evidence for tackling the drivers of ill health among men in the UK. Alcohol Change UK is working on, and writing a response, to the consultation.

Following the announcement our Interim Director of Research and Public Affairs, Ash Singleton, has shared his thoughts on the five things you need to know about men’s alcohol consumption and what Alcohol Change UK wants to see in the strategy.

** Alcohol Awareness Week is on the way!
------------------------------------------------------------

This year’s Alcohol Awareness Week will be taking place from 7-13 July on the theme of ‘Alcohol and work’.

Across the week, we’ll be looking at how alcohol affects our health and wellbeing and how this can show up at work, and how the pressures from work can cause us to drink more than we’d like.

We’ll be sharing helpful tips and advice on the signs to watch out for, in ourselves and others, if we’re struggling with our drinking and some changes we can make to improve our health, productivity and happiness.

We’ll also be looking at the benefits of creating healthier, safer and more respectful workplace cultures in all types of industries and sectors that are fully inclusive and work for us all.

** Supporting people with alcohol-related liver disease; the vital role of nutrition
------------------------------------------------------------

To celebrate World Liver Day on 19 April, dietitian Bally Parekh wrote about why nutrition matters for people living with alcohol-related liver disease.

Cutting back or stopping drinking altogether is the best way to protect ourselves from alcohol-related liver problems, but good nutrition is also important for looking after our liver: preventing malnutrition, muscle loss, and frailty.

** The ‘messy middle’ of alcohol harm
------------------------------------------------------------
[link removed]

We’re not being told the whole truth about alcohol and how it impacts our daily lives.

We recently commissioned a major research study to explore the drinking habits of UK adults, and the impact alcohol is having on our health and wellbeing.

Conducted by the Behavioural Insights Team, the study showed that even at ‘low risk’ levels of drinking, there were links with people experiencing reduced sleep quality, worse daily functioning, and poor dental health – and even higher reported levels of cardiovascular disease and cancer.

We want to see a world where alcohol is moved from centre stage and is seen as optional, and not as an essential part of our lives. That’s why we’re calling on the government to put solutions in place that we know will work to prevent alcohol harm before it happens, like tighter restrictions on alcohol advertising and marketing to protect us from being constantly targeted by big alcohol companies to drink more, and clearer alcohol labelling to help us better understand the risks of drinking.

** Increase in alcohol-related deaths an “acute crisis”
------------------------------------------------------------

The persistent higher rate of alcohol deaths in England since the pandemic in 2020 is an “acute crisis” requiring urgent action from government, according to a new study led by researchers at the University of Sheffield and UCL. It found alcohol death rates increased by a fifth in 2020, rising by a further 13.5 per cent between 2020 and 2022. The researchers have called for substantial investment in health services to better detect and treat liver disease, as well as policies such as minimum unit pricing and advertising restrictions.
