As the minority party in the Senate, Democrats aren’t able to call formal hearings or issue subpoenas to investigate Donald Trump.
That being said, there are other ways to hold him accountable. We have tools at our disposal that we can use to shed light on their corruption and attacks on our democracy.
And you better believe I’m going to use all of them.
One of those tools is what’s known as a “shadow hearing” — which is essentially an unofficial hearing that we can hold to question individuals willing to testify about the Trump administration’s abuses of power.
Alongside a few of my colleagues, including Congressman Jamie Raskin, I held a hearing last month during which we heard testimony from former Department of Justice employees who refused to be intimidated by Donald Trump’s threats.
Their testimony highlighted what we’ve known to be true for quite some time: Donald Trump is trying to remake the Department of Justice in his image, threatening and firing career attorneys who refuse to go along with his attacks on the rule of law and replacing them with extreme loyalists who are willing to bend to his will.
Despite what Donald Trump may think, the lawyers at the Department of Justice are not his personal lawyers. They are the people’s lawyers tasked with defending the Constitution, upholding the rule of law, and protecting our democracy.
We’re living in unprecedented times, John. Trump is working to turn the Justice Department into another political arm of his administration — and Republicans are dead silent as he chips away at our democracy every single day.
Republicans may refuse to speak up against his lawless actions, but my colleagues and I will continue to hold shadow hearings and utilize all the other tools at our disposal to hold his administration accountable and defend the Constitution.
