Two months ago, we sent nearly 36,700 letters and calls to lawmakers in states with Democratic government trifectas to demand that they pass laws protecting their residents’ privacy and safety online. Now, we’re starting to see those demands turn into action.
States have responded with a surge of legislation: since February, over two dozen bills and policy plans have been introduced or pushed forward. These bills will help protect against Big Tech’s surveillance and their complicity in government authoritarianism and overreach. If we want to see these bills pass, we can’t let up now. Major wins include New Mexico [1] and Washington’s [2] bills to expand protections against out-of-state investigations into abortion care, gender affirming care and immigration status. These policies would block federal agencies and lawmakers from using personal data to identify, arrest, detain or deport community members. New Mexico’s bill was just signed into law!
These breakthroughs, just a couple months after we made our demands, are proof that our voices can generate change. And we’re just getting started. We’ve got big plans to work with allied organizations to ensure that these bills not only pass, but they mark the start of even stronger protections, opt-in consent laws and limits on how our data is used, bought and sold.
