John,
Calling himself “the fertilization president” wasn’t enough apparently [1]. Now we’re dealing with possible policies to solve the “crisis” of declining birth rates such as $5,000 “baby bonus” to every American mother after delivery and a “National Medal of Motherhood” to mothers with six or more children [2].
Because who needs bodily autonomy when you get a shiny medal?
Never mind that the U.S. Department of Labor released recent findings that found childcare costs remain an almost prohibitive expense for many parents [3] or that we remain one of the only industrialized nations without a law to guarantee paid leave [4], I’m sure some money and a medal will make a new mom throw all those cares away.
We know what this is: a way for anti-abortion leaders to curtail people’s rights to have the family they want, when they want it, how they want it.
Worse, they are using this as a push towards a very specific idea of family, venerating marriage between a man and a woman and ignoring or dismissing families outside of traditional gender roles or family structures.
Maybe they missed the lesson in elementary school that there’s more than one way to make a family. Let’s give them a reminder.
Sincerely,
Erin Matson

P.S. I’m getting pretty sick of them claiming they care about kids and families. Tell them that being pro-family is being pro-abortion with a donation today.
