** Digitising NHS and social care could cost £21bn, raising funding concerns

An independent report has estimated that delivering Labour’s ambition to modernise NHS and social care technology will require at least £21 billion—ten times the current annual budget for digital health services. The analysis, commissioned by the Health Foundation and carried out by PA Consulting, outlined a need for £8 billion in capital investment and £3 billion for early implementation, with ongoing annual costs of £2 billion over five years to maintain and optimise systems.

The findings suggest significant additional funding will be needed beyond existing Department of Health and Social Care allocations, posing tough choices for ministers around tax rises or cuts to other services. As the government prepares its 10-year Health Plan, the report underscores the scale of the financial and organisational commitment required to move from analogue to fully digital healthcare.

** Opinion: Labour under pressure to deliver change with revised NHS 10-year plan on the way

Writing in the FT, Robert Shrimsley discusses the growth in support for Reform and how the government plans to respond. He states that there will be a flurry of announcements over the next few months, including a long-awaited 10-year plan for health. However, according to Shrimsley, Number 10’s view is that further work is needed on the early draft.

** Health leaders in Wales urge next government to focus on prevention and inequality

A new report from the Welsh NHS Confederation, based on feedback from nearly 100 health leaders, stresses the urgent need for the next government to invest in preventive measures and address broader social factors that influence health. The findings suggest that without a fundamental shift towards early intervention and tackling health disparities, the strain on health and social care systems could become unmanageable. The report calls for long-term financial planning and a joined-up national strategy across government departments to improve public health and reduce inequality in Wales.

** USA: ADHD symptoms associated with higher risk of teen tobacco use, study finds

New research has revealed that adolescents displaying multiple symptoms of ADHD are more likely to engage in tobacco use and vaping. The study, which followed over 13,000 U.S. youths for nine years, found that the risk increased in line with the number of ADHD symptoms reported — regardless of formal diagnosis. The findings highlight the importance of ongoing assessment and treatment of ADHD during adolescence, as well as the need for preventive education around tobacco use and vaping.
