Voter registration, which historically peaks in a presidential election year, is one more casualty of the COVID-19 pandemic. In Virginia, the bulk of voter registrations come through the Department of Motor Vehicles, which has just begun to reopen by appointment.

Two charts show how statewide registrations for the year are running about 40,000 below the pace set in 2016.
