As we mark the 80th anniversary of VE Day, it's more important than ever to reflect on how standing shoulder-to-shoulder with our European allies is critical to our future peace and prosperity.
Joe Biden's powerful BBC interview yesterday revealed that he believes there is a greater threat now to democracy than at any other time since the Second World War. Trump's pressuring of Ukraine to cede territory to Russia, which Biden described as "modern-day appeasement", has put the post-war transatlantic alliances we've built over the past 80 years under immense strain.

<[link removed]>In response, Europe is preparing to strengthen its own defence and security. And the UK needs to step up to play a key role.
But this is about more than just defence. It's about economic growth and creating a future where we can stand strong together. Independent research <[link removed]> shows that a better trade deal with the EU could provide up to 2.2% GDP growth – more than any other government proposal. Trade with our nearest neighbours is crucial to rebuilding our economy, securing vital defence spending, and strengthening our collective position on the world stage.
