The so-called SAVE Act has passed in the House of Representatives, and now it’s heading to the Senate. Let’s be clear: this bill isn’t about “election security.” It’s a blatant attempt to make it harder for millions of eligible Americans to vote.
The SAVE Act would require everyone to provide in-person proof of citizenship — like a passport or birth certificate — to register or update your voter registration. That sounds simple, but it’s not.
More than 140 million Americans don’t have a passport or easy access to a birth certificate with their legal name on it. That includes:
- 69 million women whose current name doesn’t match their birth certificate
- Low-income Americans who can’t afford to track down or pay for documents
- Naturalized citizens and people of color who are disproportionately flagged by flawed systems
This is a 21st-century poll tax and it’s a clear attempt to silence voters and rig the game. If the SAVE Act becomes law, we could lose online voter registration in 42 states, community-led voter registration drives, and the ability for millions of voters — Democrats, Republicans, and independents — to make their voices heard.
This isn’t election integrity. That is voter suppression.
Our members of Congress should be protecting our right to vote — not trying to take it away. Sign on to tell the Senate: Reject the SAVE Act and stand up for democracy.
This is a democracy. Let’s show Trump that leaders don’t win by silencing the people, they win by earning our vote.
