I can’t believe Trump is talking about reopening Alcatraz in 2025, John.
The last time that prison was open, Robert Kennedy was in the cabinet. And I’m not talking about RFK Jr. (I mean the good RFK, the original). And no, I do not think we should be reopening Alcatraz as a federal prison — a new idea posited by Donald Trump this week. Probably after watching Netflix.
“Look at it, it’s sort of amazing. It sort of represents something that’s both horrible and beautiful and strong and miserable and weak, it’s got a lot of qualities that are interesting…”
This isn’t a serious proposal.
Millions of tourists visit Alcatraz every year, bringing in $60 million for the National Park Service. And hundreds of millions more in tourism.
But instead of keeping this popular tourist attraction open, Trump wants to reopen it as a federal prison, even though it was incredibly expensive to operate in the 1960s when it closed and would be incredibly expensive to reopen today. Even then, it was three times as expensive as any other prison. Because it lacks fresh water and is, well, AN ISLAND.
This fundamentally unserious idea is part of his tough guy persona, John, and his effort to distract from his abysmal handling of the economy.
And it does absolutely nothing to help address the country’s most pressing concerns. Nothing to help families struggling to make ends meet. Nothing to make violent crime go down. Nothing to help bank accounts or 401ks.
While Trump is focused on Alcatraz, I’m focused on supporting families. Chip in to help power this work.
