At Fair Fight Action, while we’re rooted in Georgia, we’ve got reach across the South through our coalition work — and this region is a critical battleground for the freedom to vote.
We don’t need to open a textbook to remember how Jim Crow laws disenfranchised generations of Black voters in the South.
We don’t need to open a newspaper to know that anti-voter extremists are still trying to keep the spirit of Jim Crow alive — by suppressing votes in communities of color in the South and around the country.
But everyone should also understand that the South’s true legacy isn’t about living under repression — it’s about fighting for freedom.
It’s about the decades of tireless activism and unyielding bravery by Civil Rights Movement leaders and foot soldiers alike.
It’s about the tenacity and determination that led to accomplishments like the Voting Rights Act of 1965.
And it’s about the perseverance of everyone who’s still fighting for free and fair elections.
The South shows how far some people are willing to go to silence the voices of those they deem undesirable. But it also shows how hard we can fight back to make real the promises of democracy.
That’s a lesson we all need to hold in our hearts for the fights ahead.
Throughout the South, we’re proud to work alongside partner organizations to secure voting rights and equal access to the ballot box.
With advocacy and education, with coalition-building and outreach, we fight in solidarity against anti-voter legislation. We fight for policies that make it easier for voters to make their voices heard. And we track, expose, and work to prevent the modern voter suppression tactics whose goals are all-too-reminiscent of Jim Crow.
Look: no one should write off what we can accomplish in the South.
Just recently, with Black voters leading the way and one of our partners fighting hard on the ground, Louisianans turned out in higher-than-expected numbers to stop an attempted power grab by state politicians who thought they could pass four constitutional amendments in a sleepy election.
Not so fast. Those leaders got a fresh reminder of where true power lies in a democracy. And we’re working as part of a broad coalition in the South to make sure voters can exercise that power — while bringing a Southern lens to national conversations about how we defend democracy.
Southerners have been — and will stay — front and center in the fight for freedom.
And thank you for everything you do to help make this fight possible.
