ACTION: PLEASE CALL SENATOR PORTMAN (OH) AND DEMAND HE FULLY RESTORE
OUR RRB UNEMPLOYMENT BENEFITS!
There is an opportunity to fully-fund Railroad Unemployment (RUIA)
benefits as originally intended through the HEROES Act that has passed
the U.S. Congress. This is important, as railroads continue to furlough
or layoff workers in response to the pandemic and precision scheduled
railroading.

Currently, railroad unemployment is reduced by 5.9 percent due to
sequestration legislation of recent years. State unemployment - where
many workers are covered if they lose their job - has not been subject
to these cuts. This has created an unfair burden on railroaders who
lose their job, as we are not eligible for state unemployment benefits.

RUIA benefits are wholly funded by the railroads, and no taxpayer
dollars are included in the RUIA Trust fund. With zero taxpayer dollars
going into the trust fund, elimination of the sequestration requirement
has no effect whatsoever on either the National Deficit or the U.S.
Budget.

Se. Rob Portman (R-OH) is the chair of the Senate committee that will
ultimately decide if the 5.9 percent sequestration on our benefits are
lifted. We are asking ALL railroaders to call or write or email his
office in support of eliminating the sequestration cut.

The flyer contained at the link below has sample text that you can use
when contacting Sen. Portman's office. Please consider supporting Rail
Labor's cause on this important issue. It could be money in your pocket
someday.
