COLORADANS TO DECIDE INITIATIVE THAT WOULD PROHIBIT ABORTIONS AFTER 22 WEEKS GESTATIONAL AGE

The Colorado 22-Week Abortion Ban Initiative officially qualified on June 8 for the November 3 ballot. If approved, the ballot measure would prohibit abortions after a fetus reaches 22 weeks gestational age as calculated from the first day of the woman's last menstrual period (LMP).

** GOV. MURPHY APPOINTS PIERRE-LOUIS TO NEW JERSEY SUPREME COURT

Gov. Phil Murphy (D) nominated Fabiana Pierre-Louis June 5 to a seat on the New Jersey Supreme Court. Current Justice Walter Timpone will reach the court’s mandatory retirement age of 70 this November. In New Jersey, the governor nominates state supreme court judges who are then confirmed by the state Senate. The partisan composition of the state Senate is 25 Democrats and 15 Republicans.

** FLORIDA SUPREME COURT RULES BALLOT SUMMARY MISLEADING

In a 4-1 decision, the Florida Supreme Court ruled June 4 that the ballot summary of the Ban on Semiautomatic Rifles and Shotguns Initiative? was misleading, and the initiative should not be placed on the 2022 ballot. The ruling invalidated all 174,564 valid signatures the sponsoring group, Ban Assault Weapons NOW, had gathered.
