Hi John,
I wanted to let you know about a huge win for Common Cause North Carolina, one that has nationwide implications.
And this time, we’re writing with some good news.
For six months, a losing candidate—Jefferson Griffin—refused to accept the results of a fair election. He lost the 2024 North Carolina Supreme Court race... and then tried to throw out tens of thousands of valid votes just because he didn’t like the outcome.
Let that sink in. He lost—and then tried to erase the voices of the voters who beat him.
That’s not just wrong—it’s dangerous. It’s part of a much bigger, deeply troubling trend we’re seeing across the country: politicians trying to rewrite the rules and silence voters when elections don’t go their way.
But this time, it didn’t work.
After a federal court REJECTED his baseless attempt to disqualify 60,000 lawful voters and overturn the election, Griffin finally conceded today.[1]
John, this historic win for our democracy is the result of Common Cause NC’s six-month The People v. Griffin campaign, which rallied North Carolinians from every corner of the state to stand up against Griffin’s attacks.
We hosted dozens of events, spurred our neighbors to make hundreds of calls and send thousands of letters, and organized hundreds of influential legal voices to say clearly: Our elections belong to the people, not politicians. Griffin must concede.
And it worked. All the organizing, all the public pressure—it made a difference. We made a difference. You made a difference.
Throughout Griffin’s shameful attempt to overturn the election, the people of North Carolina made it clear that they will not be silent when a politician attacks our voting rights or those of our family members, friends, and neighbors.
We know this won’t be the last time someone tries to pull a stunt like this, John. But this victory is a reminder of the awesome power of everyday people to protect everyone’s freedom to vote.
Thank you for being part of this movement. We're proud to fight alongside you.
In solidarity,
The team at Common Cause
