John,

One of the central premises of our government is that every lawmaker should be able to answer to their constituents.

Lately, we've seen Americans showing up at town halls angry and demanding answers from their Republican representatives. We’re sure you've seen the clips of a Kansas senator abruptly leaving his town hall early and Georgia Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene calling her constituents “brainwashed.”

It has gotten to a point where, to avoid the uproar from constituents and the embarrassing footage making the rounds online, a top Republican told his congressional colleagues to stop holding in-person town halls. Just hide from your constituents.

It's an absurd and fundamentally undemocratic strategy. And one of the main reasons they think they can get away with it? Gerrymandering.

The extreme wing of the Republican Party has grown dependent on drawing maps designed to lock themselves in non-competitive districts, where they know they’ll win as long as they have an “R” next to their name. It allows them to feel free to disregard their constituents’ opinions.

At the end of the day, these lawmakers aren’t accountable to anyone but their party leaders. And when elected officials can pick their voters instead of voters picking their officials, the system is broken.

So here’s what the NDRC is doing about this:

With a razor-thin margin in the House, we’re preparing to stop further Republican attempts to steal seats in Congress during the midterms.

We’re working to elect Democracy Defenders in critical state-level elections — leaders who will have a direct role in determining how fair and representative our electoral maps will be.

And we’re working right now to make sure everyone knows about Trump’s ham-handed attempts to tamper with the 2030 census.

While the Republicans hide from their constituents, let’s build a fairer, more representative democracy that refuses to allow that failure of leadership. Can you make a donation today to help power this work?

Thanks so much,

NDRC HQ
