Newberry Man Arraigned on Child Abuse Charges

*LANSING* – Today, Roy Metcalf, 22, of Newberry, was arraigned in the 92nd District Court in Newberry for alleged abuse of a five-week-old infant, announced Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel. He is charged with two counts of First-Degree Child Abuse, a potential life-sentence offense.

In June of 2024, Michigan Children’s Protective Services was notified by Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital of suspected abuse following the hospital’s assessment of a five-week-old patient, brought initially to the Helen Newberry Joy Hospital in Luce County by her mother and father, Roy Metcalf, before being transferred to Munson Medical Center in Grand Traverse County and subsequently to Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital in Kent County. Injuries observed in the infant included a fractured femur and subdural hemorrhaging, and Metcalf has been charged with one count of First-Degree Child Abuse for each.

“Cases of child abuse are deeply disturbing and heartbreaking, especially when they involve a child as young as five weeks old,” Nessel said. “My office remains committed to prosecuting those who would harm our most innocent and vulnerable to the fullest extent of the law.”

Metcalf was granted a personal bond and will next appear before the Court on May 15, 2025.
