The United States is expected to welcome millions of visitors for the World Cup and the Olympics—but they may not be safe from Trump's cruel policies. Sign the petition to reconsider the U.S. as a host country.
Dear MoveOn member,
The United States will play host to the FIFA World Cup next year, alongside Mexico and Canada, and to the Summer Olympics in Los Angeles in 2028. Millions of visitors are expected from across the world, but there's no plan to keep them safe from the Trump administration's increasingly dangerous and lawless policies.
Just yesterday, Vice President JD Vance threatened that if World Cup visitors overstay their welcome, "they'll have to talk to Secretary Noem." Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy echoed the warnings, "Don’t overstay your visa. Don't stay too long."1
Experts are already concerned about the treatment visitors to the World Cup and Olympics might face—especially for people traveling from countries that the Trump administration has treated with open hostility. And as Elon Musk and DOGE continue to dismantle key government operations, there's a growing concern that people, including athletes, will struggle to get the necessary visas to visit and will face undue scrutiny or hardship.2
Without a plan to prevent dangerous situations for the millions of people set to travel to the U.S. over the next three years, officials at FIFA and the Olympics must revisit whether we can safely host these major sporting events. Will you sign the petition?
Countries like Ireland, the Netherlands, Denmark, the United Kingdom, Germany, Finland, and Canada have issued travel advisories about the possibility of being detained by the Department of Homeland Security in the United States and have warned transgender people about the State Department's chilling stance on passport gender markers.3
And countries are wary for good reason. People have reported being subject to invasive searches and interrogations at the airport, and recently, a legal permanent resident was strip-searched, violently interrogated, and detained when returning home from a trip.4 He remains in detention despite no charges being brought against him.
As the federal government becomes more and more hostile to immigrants and the LGBTQ+ community, athletes and fans alike will be left without protection during the World Cup and the Olympics. Add your name to tell officials to reconsider the U.S. as a host country.
In March, Trump's draft "travel ban" list leaked, detailing 43 countries whose citizens the administration is considering targeting with restrictions on travel.5 Among them is Iran—a country that has already qualified for the 2026 World Cup.6
It's impossible for FIFA and the Olympics to ensure that visitors and athletes from participating countries like Iran will be safely allowed to enter the United States—or be protected from dangerous and unfair treatment once they're here.
Tell the leadership at FIFA and the Olympics to prevent looming disaster by revoking the host role from the U.S.
The World Cup and the Olympics are time-honored events that showcase the incredible skill of athletes from around the world. They have the potential to bring nations and communities together to celebrate a shared appreciation for popular sports like soccer, swimming, tennis, and more. The Olympics in particular have long been seen as a way to foster peace among participating countries.
But as immigrants are being disappeared without a trace and a growing number of visas revoked without explanation, the U.S. cannot be counted on to be a safe or welcoming host country for these landmark events.
Add your name to show the leadership at FIFA and the Olympics that you have serious concerns about our country's current ability to safely host millions of people from across the world.
Thanks for all you do.
