When our founder, Dr. E. Fuller Torrey was born in 1937, brain diseases like schizophrenia and bipolar disorder were highly stigmatized, dangerously misunderstood, and largely untreatable. People living with these diseases were often confined to mental institutions with poor, sometimes abhorrent, living conditions.
Dr. Torrey’s life’s work has been to achieve a vision for a future in which people living with severe mental illnesses were no longer caught in a “revolving door” of non-treatment, undertreatment, hospitalization, homelessness, and criminalization.

When others looked away, he saw the humanity and potential in every person living with SMI. He challenged broken systems and offered real solutions when few others would.
Today, we’re building on that vision. Now more than ever, our community is at risk of losing access to affordable treatment, but thanks to bold advocates and supporters like you, we can continue to push for policy change, expanded treatment and resources, and to fight for those most often overlooked.
