Economic Democracy Weekly

In today’s Economic Democracy Weekly, we explore the many connections between economic justice and community preservation. We begin with an article that looks at how western North Carolinians are leveraging community institutions to rebuild in the wake of Hurricane Helene last fall. Next, a story on how perpetual purpose trusts preserve community land and businesses. We follow with two news stories that track efforts to preserve community values and resources in the face of authoritarian threats. In the first, the former commissioner of Social Security and Maryland governor discusses how states and localities can fight for both our social safety net and immigrant rights—by holding federal officials criminally liable. The second looks at how advocates nationwide are mobilizing to preserve AmeriCorps, an essential nonprofit support and community economy building network.
