We've sent a number of fundraising emails since my election, and I know some folks wonder why. Why do I need to raise money even though I just won?
It's a fair question -- please let me try to answer.
As you know, President Trump is trying to cut taxes for billionaires and paying for it by taking an axe to programs people need to survive.
We're talking about the poor, the hungry, the elderly, and we're talking about veterans as well. All on the chopping block.
You may also know that I've done a series of town meetings recently -- something that will continue in the future. And in many of those meetings, I talk about the impact of those cuts on families, impacts on programs, and benefits I am familiar with firsthand.
I did not grow up wealthy. Far from it. I benefited from a number of lifesaving programs before joining the Marine Corps. And after I served in Iraq, I relied on a number of the benefits I earned through my service.
When I tell those stories, it makes a difference. People listen. We are able to connect. With veterans. With working class voters. With Latinos. Precisely the people Democrats need to convince.
That takes resources. And the response to these emails is my primary way of raising those funds. So that means I have to ask. And today is one of those days.
