Dear Friend,

I wanted to take an opportunity to update you on my recent work during the month of April in Washington, D.C. and Connecticut.

I want you to know I am continuing to work to fight back and rein in the Trump Administration as they try to unilaterally shut down federal agencies and fire federal employees. Please rest assured, I am fighting to assert Congress’s power of the purse and protect the programs Americans depend on.

We are in a cost-of-living crisis. I am committed to moving policies that put more money back into the pockets of hardworking Americans. Women make 75 cents for every dollar a man in the same job makes. That is why last month, I reintroduced legislation to eliminate the gender pay gap. I am fighting to ensure that Congress pass the Paycheck Fairness Act and demand equal pay for all women.

I also reintroduced the American Family Act alongside Senators Cory Booker and Michael Bennet. This legislation would make the expanded, monthly Child Tax Credit permanent. The skyrocketing cost-of-living has pushed working American families to the brink and the Child Tax Credit is an antidote to high costs – helping Americans afford essentials like groceries, gas, child care, and more. We must give American families the economic security they need.

In April, I voted against the Republican budget proposal, which would undermine our healthcare system. Congressional Republicans and unelected billionaire Elon Musk plan to gut Medicaid by $880 billion, leaving 80 million Americans without healthcare. One-third of Americans get their healthcare through Medicaid. That is 40 percent of children, people with disabilities, most low wage works, and seniors in nursing homes or receiving care at home. These cuts would mean closed hospitals in rural areas, closed community health centers, and many mothers and babies endangered at birth. According to the Regional Leadership Council, these cuts will impact 229,000 individuals in our district, which is 32% of residents. We need the government to fight for the middle-class, the working-class, & the vulnerable – not Musk and billionaires.

Moreover, on April 29th, I held a Democratic hearing to expose the Trump Administration’s efforts to obliterate the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and our public health system, which you can watch here.

In Middletown, I joined Representative John Larson and Senator Blumenthal to stand against the dismantling of the Social Security Administration and the harm it will bring to millions of Americans who rely on these hard-earned benefits. We have a duty to protect Social Security for generations to come.

I also visited Dixwell’s new 35,000 square-foot ConnCAT facility that will bring job training, housing, education, and more to New Haven. This is what it looks like when government and community work together to build opportunity. I was proud to provide Community Project Funding for this transformative initiative and will keep working to bring back resources to Connecticut.

As Elon Musk and President Trump continue their illegal and chaotic crusade to destroy our education system and abolish the Department of Education, I celebrated School Library Month—a time to affirm that every student deserves access to books that reflect our country’s full story. I am grateful to our dedicated librarians for inspiring students to love reading and transforming them into lifelong learners.

In Case You Missed It: I was awarded the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic as Commendatore by Italian Ambassador Mariangela Zappia. This is the highest-ranking honor of the Italian Republic, and as a daughter of Italian immigrants, this recognition means the world to my family and me. I am so grateful to share this moment with my fellow Italian Americans.
