In college, I attended a journalism conference that I’ll never forget. OK, I don’t know where it was. Oklahoma maybe? But I remember it because I heard Jacqui Banaszynski for the first time and felt like a career as a storyteller was possible.
Later, in my first job, I heard a couple in St. Louis speak about how they job-shared when their children were little, and I felt like a career as a storyteller and a mom was possible. (I ended up working for one of them ([link removed]) years later at the St. Louis Beacon.)
At every conference I’ve been lucky enough to attend, from the see-and-be-seen scene at ONA to the indie rocker vibes at the alt-weekly annual gathering, I’ve learned something that’s helped my beat, my career and my connections with colleagues.
And so, like I did last year, I present to you this incomplete guide to the journalism conference season ([link removed]) . Honestly, it’s year-round, but it really picks up in the summer through the fall. If you spot any I’m missing, please let me know.
Happy elbow-rubbing!
