CUMBERLAND COUNTY - The Maine Department of Transportation will be reducing traffic to a single lane on the northbound side of I-295 between mile markers 17 and 19 during overnight hours next week. This work is part of the ongoing project to replace the Cousins River Bridge on I-295 near the Yarmouth-Freeport town line. Lane closures will occur from 7:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m., beginning the evening of Tuesday, May 13th and concluding the morning of Thursday, May 15th. The scheduled work includes milling, paving, and installing pavement markings on the existing approaches to the Cousins River Bridge. Signs will be in place to safely direct both passenger vehicles and trucks through the work zone. Message boards in and around the project area will provide updates about closures and traffic flow. This schedule is weather-dependent. The contractor on this project is CPM Constructors of Freeport. The total contract amount is $7,853,726.13

This work is part of the Cousins River Bridge Replacement Project, which began in September 2024 and is scheduled to be completed by November 2026. The project will replace the existing bridge over the Cousins River on U.S. Route 1, raise the bridge deck by approximately two feet, and realign the structure closer to I-295. The project also includes the addition of a 10-foot-wide multi-use path that will extend from near the old Muddy Rudder restaurant to just south of the Freeport Caf.
