Dear Friend of Press Freedom,

Last week, we argued that the Trump administration’s new rules making it easier to spy on journalists were designed to chill basic reporting and mislead the public. This week, we obtained an explosive document through the Freedom of Information Act that proves it.
SUPPORT TRANSPARENCY ([link removed])

As reported in The New York Times, the memo released to Freedom of the Press Foundation (FPF) shows that intelligence agencies disagree with a key claim the Trump administration has relied on to justify its indefensible deportations to an El Salvador prison.

The administration had recently opened a criminal leak investigation into previous reporting on the same memo, and used the stories to justify new Department of Justice rules that would make it far easier for the government to spy on journalists and threaten them with jail time.

Thanks to FPF, the public can now see for itself that the memo should have been public all along. The reporting makes crystal clear that the Trump administration’s disingenuous attempt to crack down on press freedom under the guise of “national security” is a sham designed to stifle important journalism in the public interest.

FPF has plenty more FOIA requests in the works, in addition to all our other efforts to combat government secrecy. But without support from people like you, these efforts wouldn’t be possible.

If you believe the public has a right to know, support FPF’s work today.

More victories are possible — with your help!
