Did you see this?
Right now, Donald Trump is looking for ways to incentivize Americans to have more children. Their solution? A one-time payment of $5,000 as a “baby bonus” for new moms.
As someone who raised my child as a single mom, I have a few thoughts.
Raising my child Somáh on my own was a choice I made, and it was never easy. I went to Planned Parenthood for essential health care. When times were tough, we relied on food stamps and WIC to get on our feet. We didn’t have much, but we were able to scrape by because of the safety nets that were there for us when we struggled.
We didn’t have much money, but our struggles made us fierce.
When it was time for Somáh to attend preschool, I had no idea how I’d cover the costs. Luckily, I found a school that allowed parents to volunteer to clean up classrooms in exchange for a discount on tuition. There was no other way I could’ve afforded to send Somah to preschool, given the huge price tag.
I volunteered in my child’s classroom for a discount on tuition.
Today, families across New Mexico are getting crushed by the rising costs of housing, child care, health care, and food prices. In many cases, Trump’s proposed “baby bonus” won’t even cover the cost of giving birth, let alone provide the vital support young parents rely on to raise their families.
I understand the struggles that parents across New Mexico are facing. I know the stakes. And I know that together, we can implement the bold solutions it will take to tackle our state’s toughest challenges and make New Mexico a great place to raise a family. If you’re with me, I hope you’ll donate $5 today to support our people-powered campaign for New Mexico.
Here’s a bit of free advice for Donald Trump on how he can actually support new moms:
❌ Stop defunding Planned Parenthood, which ensures expectant and new mothers can access quality, affordable maternal health care.
❌ Stop attacking Medicaid, which covers 55% of births in New Mexico.
❌ Stop taking aim at WIC, food stamps, and school lunch programs which keep young children and their families fed.
❌ Stop gutting our public school system so that our children can get a good education.
I’m running for governor because I know New Mexico can be a great place to raise a family – but we have a lot more work to do. I know from personal experience that we must invest in affordable child care and public schools, prioritize public safety to create safe neighborhoods, and guarantee quality maternal health care to everyone who needs it.
Thank you for hearing my story. 💛
