Dear Health Advocates,
House leadership pushed back their timeline for key committee markups on the budget package, including in the House Energy and Commerce Committee. The markup is now scheduled for the week of May 12th , when Republicans will outline the specific cuts they will pursue in Medicaid to achieve their $880 billion goal. We expect to see the policy proposals that the Committee will consider released in the hours leading up to the markup. The House Agricultural Committee, which has jurisdiction over SNAP, is now also scheduled to meet next week.
Speaker Johnson's goal remains to have the House vote on a reconciliation bill by Memorial Day. As of now, we do not expect there to be a parallel Senate process to the House process; according to staff, Congressional Republicans are working behind the scenes to agree on a package. Some key Republicans are still drawing a hard line against massive cuts to the program, and it is important that we keep up the pressure.
Families USA and our partners have numerous ways for you to engage as we approach these key dates, including this week as we continue our push back against any and all Medicaid cuts. This includes new Defend Medicaid Days of Action [[link removed]] today and tomorrow, May 6 and 7. Caring Across Generations and other prominent disability advocates are hosting a 24-hour Protect Medicaid Vigil [[link removed]] between Wednesday, May 7 at 1 PM and Thursday, May 8 at 1 PM. The event will consist of two bookend rallies to start and end the program, with 20+ hours of telling the stories of those who would be most affected by any cuts to the Medicaid program.
